World’s Largest Prime Number Discovered by UCM Professor

Professor Curtis Cooper, a professor of computer science at the University of Central Missouri, has discovered the worlds largest known prime number.  This discovery took place on January 7, 2016.  The computer that discovered the new largest prime number is located at UCM’s Lee’s Summit campus.

Prime Numbers

Prime numbers are natural numbers, greater than one, that have no positive divisors other than one and itself. The discovered number is  2^74207281 – 1.  This number is  22,338,618 digits long. The association that researches prime numbers, the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS), may reward $3,000 for this discovery.
